PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — Amanda Lynch, director of Brown University’s Institute for the Study of Environment and Society (ISES), has been named a fellow of the American Meteorological Society (AMS).

AMS fellows are elected on the basis of “outstanding contributions to the atmospheric or related oceanic or hydrologic sciences or their applications during a substantial period of years.” Each year, the number of newly elected fellows is limited to 0.2 percent of the membership. This year’s class will be recognized at the AMS’s annual meeting to be held in January 2015.

“It is an honor indeed to be recognized by my fellow atmospheric and oceanic scientists in the American Meteorological Society,” said Lynch, professor of Earth, environmental, and planetary sciences. “I owe a lot to the AMS for supporting excellence in our disciplines, for understanding early the significance of climate change science, and for forging new paths in interdisciplinary research.”

Lynch has published more than 100 peer-reviewed articles, policy briefs, book chapters, and books on climate science, climate change adaptation, and meteorology, particularly in the polar regions. She currently serves as editor of the AMS journal Weather, Climate and Society.

Lynch joined the Brown faculty in 2011. In her role as ISES director, she guides the institute’s efforts to explore through research and teaching the linked social and environmental processes that will shape the future of the planet.
