PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — "Indomitable," the latest public art incarnation of Brown's bear mascot, will be installed on campus on Monday, Oct. 28, 2013, weather permitting. The 10-foot bronze Kodiak bear sculpture will be lowered by crane onto a four-foot-high platform on the southwest corner of Ittleson Quadrangle, near the entrance to the Nelson Fitness Center. Installation is expected to begin at 6 a.m. and last approximately six hours.
The sculpture’s creator, British artist Nick Bibby, will deliver a lecture on “How to Make a Bear ... or a Dodo: The lost wax method, sand casting, and the representation of wildlife, extant and extinct,” on Thursday, Oct. 31, 2013. Free and open to the public, the lecture will take place at 5:30 p.m. in List Art Center auditorium.
A brief dedication ceremony will take place on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2013, at 5:45 p.m. on Ittleson Quadrangle. Speakers include Brown University President Christina Paxson; Jack Hayes, director of athletics; Jo-Ann Conklin, director of the David Winton Bell Gallery and member of the Public Art Commission; and artist Nick Bibby.
