Dr. Karen Furie, an undergraduate and medical school alumna of Brown, has returned to serve as chair of the Alpert Medical School’s Department of Neurology, as well as chief of neurology at Rhode Island, The Miriam, and Bradley hospitals. Furie will also be executive chief of neurology at each of the Alpert Medical School’s other affiliated hospitals, including Butler Hospital and the Providence VA Medical Center. She will assume the new posts Aug. 6, 2012. Prior to coming to Brown, Furie worked at Massachusetts General Hospital as associate neurologist and director of the stroke service. She also was an associate member of the faculty at the Center for Human Genetic Research and an associate professor in neurology at Harvard Medical School. “Karen Furie has a proven track record of strong leadership expertise in research and education,” said Dr. Edward Wing, dean of medicine and biological sciences. “Her appointment will boost our potential to be one of the top destinations in the country for clinical and academic neurology.”
