PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — EcoReps — Brown undergraduate educators on environmental issues — got down with residence hall trash on America Recycles Day, Friday, Nov.15.
The EcoReps say that more than 75 percent of what Americans throw out is recyclable, yet Americans recycle just 30 percent of their trash on average.
After combing through 105.8 pounds of trash and nearly 80 pounds of recyclables, they reported their findings by weight:
Trash that should have been recycled
• East Campus, 10%;
• Keeney Quad, 12%;
• Pembroke Campus, 14%;
• Wriston Quad, 36%.
Recycling that should have been trashed:
• East Campus, 14%;
• Keeney Quad, 7.2%;
• Pembroke Campus, 8.2%;
• Wriston Quad, 52%.
