A group of students from Professor Steven Lubar's "Methods in Public Humanities" spring semester class have created an augmented reality walking tour of Providence inspired by the vision of horror writer H.P. Lovecraft. "The Call of Lovecraft" will be officially unveiled at the Aug. 24 WaterFire in downtown Providence, as part of a week-long series of Lovecraft-inspired events that are taking place in conjunction with NecronomiCon 2013, a biennial convention that explores the work of Lovecraft and that of his myriad literary and artistic offspring, via speakers, panel discussions, book readings, and workshops. Spearheaded by graduate student Paul Margrave, the app-led tour brings walkers to five locations in Providence that loosely parallel the story of "The Call of Cthulhu" and have historical relevance from Lovecraft's life. An additional layer of information will include historic facts, audio, visuals, and video, all visible by pointing a smart phone at the five locations. The class also created a video, available on YouTube, to explain how the project came together. Support for the project was provided by WaterFire Providence, NecronomiCon Providence, Tag It Up, Motif Magazine, and VirtualMob.
