Brown University will host the 2013 Lipsitt-Duchin Lecture on Child and Youth Behavior Development in Salomon Hall from 4 to 6 p.m. on Thursday May 2, 2013. Deborah Gist, commissioner of education, Rhode Island Department of Education; and Gigi DiBello, head of school, Sophia Academy, will discuss education after keynote remarks titled “Reflections on Race, Child Development and School Reform” by Yale child psychiatrist Dr. James Comer. “Dr. Comer has had an outstanding career working to apply discoveries from developmental science to improve the well-being of children and youth throughout the world,” said Stephen Buka, professor and chair of Brown's Department of Epidemiology and director of Brown’s Center for the Study of Human Development, which is a co-sponsor of the event with Rhode Island Kids Count. “His work is especially relevant today in Rhode Island, given his emphasis on how best to align school reform efforts with the needs and resources of urban minority children.” The event is free and open to the public.
