A group of students from Brown has placed second in the national “Up to Us” competition,a first-of-its-kind, six-week challenge to engage young people on college campuses across the country on the federal government’s long-term debt. Sponsored by the Peter G. Peterson Foundation, the Clinton Global Initiative University (CGI U) and Net Impact, Brown’s Common Sense Action competed against 10 other teams from colleges around the country. Winners were announced at the Clinton Global Initiative University Conference in St. Louis. As part of the competition, Common Sense Action, led by students Sam Gilman and Andrew Kaplan, organized the Rhode Island Fiscal Summit, which took place at Brown on Feb. 23, 2013, and brought together students and policymakers from around Rhode Island to address the impact that growing federal deficits will have on the country’s youth. The group also worked to engage the campus through social media, videos with faculty, and meetings with students, all addressing questions about the economy and current deficit.
