On the morning of Jan. 22, 2013, the start of the spring semester, Brown’s Van Wickle Gates swung inward to welcome 94 new students to Brown. Led by the Brown Marching Band, the small procession of 81 transfer students, 11 visiting students and one student in the resumed undergraduate education program, were cheered on by faculty, staff, and students as they made their way around the College Green to mark the official beginning of their time at Brown. The tradition mimics the larger procession that takes place each September, as the incoming freshman class enters through the gates for the Opening Convocation. The gates will next open in May to allow the newly graduated Class of 2013 to make its ceremonial entry into the world beyond College Hill.
