Drs. Josiah D. Rich, professor of medicine and epidemiology at the Warren Alpert Medical School, and Gary Bubly, clinical associate professor of emergency medicine and medicine, have been named public health heroes by the Association of State and Health Territorial Officials. The Rhode Island Department of Health nominated the physicians, along with Dr. Peter Simon, the department’s medical director for community, family health, and equity. Bubly was honored for helping to regulate emergency dispensing of medications from emergency rooms and for legislation establishing Rhode Island’s prescription monitoring program. Rich was recognized for advocating to improve the health of people with addiction, including promoting access to sterile syringes and increasing drug treatment for the incarcerated and formerly incarcerated.
