Officials from the Rhode Island Department of Health and the Rhode Island Breastfeeding Coalition recognized Brown University’s commitment to supporting breastfeeding in the workplace on Tuesday, Jan. 8. Drew Murphy, director of benefits at Brown, accepted the Silver Level Breastfeeding Friendly Workplace Award for the University, presented by Dr. Michael Fine, director of the Department of Health. Brown’s Nursing Mothers in the Workplace policy gives mothers a reasonable break in designated locations to express breast milk for their children up to twice a day for a maximum of 30 minutes, within a given eight-hour workday. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention cites breastfeeding as a means to prevent obesity.
