Doctoral student David Ciplet has been named a 2012 Switzer Environmental Fellow by the Robert and Patricia Switzer Foundation. This year, the Switzer Foundation awarded 20 fellowships for emerging environmental leaders who are pursuing graduate degrees and are dedicated to positive environmental change in their careers. The fellowship provides a one-year $15,000 award for academic expenses as well as networking and leadership support. Ciplet, a candidate for a Ph.D. in environmental sociology, focused much of his research on understanding relationships of power and inequality in global climate change politics. As part of this work, he has authored numerous reports with the the International Institute for Environment and Development that assess the adequacy of finance provided to developing countries to adapt to climate change. Ciplet’s dissertation research is concerned with political factors that are both enabling and constraining a transition to more sustainable energy policy in the United States.
