Students participating in the third annual Botin Institute arrived at Brown this weekend to begin the U.S. portion of the program. The 40 participants are students from eight Latin American countries and Puerto Rico who have a vocation for public service. They will spend a week at Brown taking part in activities geared to public service and leadership, as well as workshops, seminars, and lectures by Brown faculty, former President of Chile Ricardo Lagos, former President of the Dominican Republic Leonel Fernandez, and other experts on Latin America. Then they will travel to Spain for the remainder of the 10-week program, working with academics and policymakers. The program is a collaboration of the Botín Foundation, headquartered in Santander, Cantabria, Spain, and Brown’s Program on Leadership, Liberal Arts and Public Service, which is managed by the Watson Institute and the Center for Latin American and Caribbean Studies.
