To mark the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Missile Crisis, Brown’s The Choices Program has developed “On the Brink of Nuclear War: Leadership and the Cuban Missile Crisis,” an online activity to accompany its five-day curriculum unit, The Cuban Missile Crisis: Considering its Place in Cold War History. This new lesson draws on The Armageddon Letters, new media work produced by Koji Masutani ’05, as well as former Brown professors Jim Blight and janet Lang. The phrase "the Armageddon letters" refers to the unprecedented exchange of letters and other communications among Kennedy, Khrushchev, and Castro, before, during, and after the crisis. The Armageddon Letters website is a rich transmedia resource of information, graphic novels, podcasts, and short films on the Cuban Missile Crisis — all based on decades of research on one of the most dangerous moments in human history. The Choices Program is an educational outreach program of the Watson Institute for International Studies and Brown University Continuing Education. Through its curricular resources, professional development programs, and special projects, Choices reaches high school students and teachers in more than one-third of American high schools.
