In early April, Courtney Johnson, a medicine and pathobiology graduate student, became president-elect of the Student National Medical Association, a nationwide organization dedicated to supporting underrepresented students in medicine, improving medicine in underserved communities, and increasing the cultural competence of physicians. Johnson, who came to Brown from Tougaoloo College in 2008, cited five priorities including strengthening community service and enlarging the pipeline of new students into medicine.
