Robert Scholes, professor emeritus of modern culture and media, has received an Andrew W. Mellon Foundation Emeritus Fellowship for his work in the humanities. He will use the fellowship to support his work on a project tentatively titled “The Little Review Ulysses,” which will be published by Yale University Press. Candidates for the fellowship must be officially retired but still active in their fields when the fellowship begins. The University conducted an internal competition for submissions earlier in the year, with the final pool of applicants selected by senior faculty members. Scholes joins a group of about 20 scholars from institutions around the country who will each receive up to $35,000 to fund their work for one year. Scholes has served as president of the Modern Language Association and founded the Semiotics Program in the Department of Modern Culture and Media. He continues to publish and serves as co-director of the Modernist Journal Project, which produces digital editions of culturally significant early 20th century magazines. His new book, English After the Fall — From Literature to Textuality is due out this year.
