Brown marked the 10th anniversary of 9/11 quietly and thoughtfully with an afternoon of meditative activities on the College Green. People of all ages walked a spiritual labyrinth painted on the grass. Volunteers signed up for a blood drive, and people folded origami cranes and made flags as a symbol of peace.

At 4 p.m., the bells tolled on campus, and about 100 people gathered on the Front Green for a multifaith memorial service on the steps of Manning Chapel. “Today we stand exactly where we stood 10 years ago,” said University Chaplain Janet Cooper Nelson, recalling the impromptu service that brought a stunned Brown community together on Sept. 11, 2001, beneath those same elm trees. This time, the mood was somber, but hopeful, and more than a dozen leaders of different faiths spoke. Students, faculty, and members of various churches and temples nodded as President Ruth J. Simmons spoke of the importance of neighbors. Community felt like just the right response to terror.
