Brown is one of five Rhode Island organizations to share more than $1.2 million in federal AmeriCorps grants to support local AmeriCorps volunteer work. Brown's award, $187,727 annually for the next three years, will enable the continuation of its branch of the College Advising Corps, a nationwide initiative aimed at increasing college enrollment and graduation among low-income high school and community college students. Launched in 2007, Brown's Corps has 12 full-time and 10-part time AmeriCorps members working in high schools throughout Rhode Island’s six urban districts and at the Community College of Rhode Island. They collaborate with guidance staff, principals, teachers, and others to increase the awareness, preparation, and college-going disposition of under-served students. The other additional award recipients are The Providence Plan, The Institute for the Study and Practice of Nonviolence, The Providence Children's Museum, and Save The Bay.
