The Harriet W. Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning at Brown, in collaboration with the Dartmouth Center for the Advancement of Learning, has received a $200,000, two-year grant from the Teagle Foundation. The funds will help academic departments and programs on both campuses define learning outcomes for their majors and develop measurable assessments of those outcomes. In its proposal, the Sheridan Center cited a plan to develop and conduct a professional development program in which selected departments and academic programs will be guided by a scaffolded approach to engage collaboratively in effective curriculum design and authentic assessment of student learning. Two departments will be selected through an application process and will receive departmental curriculum development grants and access to Sheridan Center resources. Brown and Dartmouth participants will have opportunities to share their processes and results through a combination of in-person meetings, teleconferences, and online information sharing.
