Brown has landed its first Beckman Scholars Program award, a highly competitive $115,000 three-year grant for undergraduate research. The award, from the Arnold and Mabel Beckman Foundation, will allow six top-ranking undergraduates to do research under the mentorship of biology and chemistry faculty at Brown and at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, Mass. “We’re thrilled to receive the prestigious Beckman Scholars grant,” said Susan Gerbi, the George Eggleston Professor of Biochemistry in the Department of Molecular Biology, Cell Biology and Biochemistry and the grant’s principal investigator. “This award will give some of our best science students a rich, rewarding experience in the laboratories of top faculty. Undergraduates who go through the Beckman program will be exceptionally well-prepared for graduate school or research careers, and the Brown/MBL partnership will be greatly strengthened by the research and mentoring collaborations that the Beckman program will foster.”
