The Brown International Advanced Research Institutes program brings promising young faculty from the Global South and emerging economies into a high-level, sustained intellectual dialogue with leading scholars in their fields and with each other.

Some 200 participants and visiting faculty have come to Brown from more than 40 countries for the 2011 Brown International Advanced Research Institutes (BIARI).

For three weeks in June, BIARI is providing a platform for promising young faculty from the developing world to engage in intellectual and policy dialogue with each other and with leading scholars in their fields. Now in its third year, BIARI offers visiting scholars a choice of four institutes:

 • Development and Inequality in the Global South: Research and Theory in Comparative Perspective;
 • Critical Global Humanities: Life Forms, Languages and Sounds of the New;
 • Climate Change and its Impacts: Water in a Changing Climate; and
 • Global Health: Multidisciplinary Perspectives on HIV/AIDS.

BIARI is sponsored by Brown’s Office of International Affairs and Santander Universities. Keith Brown, associate professor of international studies (research), is BIARI’s director.
