On Saturday, September 29, 2012, President Christina Paxson, with her husband, Ari Gabinet, participated in the lighting of WaterFire, the popular installation created by Brown alum Barnaby Evans that lines the Providence River and takes place several times throughout the summer and early fall. Traveling in a gondola, Paxson and Gabinet used torches to light some of the several dozen braziers that float atop the water. The waterfront was buzzing with entertainment and other events, including a 100 Torch Salute to honor the Girl Scouts of America at Waterplace Park Basin and local performers and artists, showing off talents like fire dancing and miming.
