Report Shows U.S. Wildlife Trade Poorly Regulated

A research team including Brown University has found that the U.S. wildlife import system is broken. In a paper published in Science, the team reported that federal authorities failed to accurately list more than four in five species entering the country. The effect: A range of diseases is introduced into the United States, potentially decimating species, devastating ecosystems and threatening food supply chains and human health.

There have been no suspected or confirmed cases of influenza A (H1N1) at the University. The World Health Organization has increased the level of its influenza pandemic alert from phase 4 to phase 5, however. University administrators sent the following e-mail communication to the campus community today.

The Rhode Island Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship will formally open its headquarters at One Davol Square on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. RI-CIE is a cooperative effort among Providence, the state, Brown University, and business and economic development officials. Gov. Donald L. Carcieri, Mayor David N. During the University’s 241st Commencement exercises Sunday, May 24, 2009, Brown University President Ruth J. Simmons will confer seven honorary degrees: Richard C. Barker, trustee emeritus; Mary Elmendorf, anthropologist; Jerry Fishman, engineer and businessman; Jessie Gruman, health advocate; Jim Yong Kim, president-elect of Dartmouth College; David Saltzman, humanitarian; and Fareed Zakaria, author and columnist.
Update May 19, 2009: Recording artist Aretha Franklin, who was to receive an honorary degree, will be unable to attend.

Fareed Zakaria to Deliver 2009 Baccalaureate Address

Fareed Zakaria, writer and international relations commentator, will deliver the 2009 baccalaureate address Saturday, May 23, to members of the Brown University Class of 2009. Zakaria’s address, to be presented in the Meeting House of the First Baptist Church in America, will be simulcast to The College Green.

Brown Anthropologist Examines Stigma of Infertility in Nigeria

New research by a Brown University anthropologist investigates the cultural context and consequences of infertility within two high-fertility populations in Nigeria. The findings, published this month in Social Science & Medicine, suggest that motherhood defines a woman’s treatment in her community, thus, childless women are disadvantaged both economically and in terms of one's identity and self-respect.

Ivy Film Festival Hosts Student Filmmakers and Stars

The Ivy Film Festival — the largest student-run film festival in North America — will be held at Brown University from Tuesday, April 21, through Sunday, April 26, 2009, showcasing 32 student films and featuring advance screenings of four feature films. The keynote event will be a panel discussion with actor Jack Nicholson, producer Robert Evans, and Brad Grey, chairman and CEO of Paramount Pictures. All events are open to the public.
