Brown’s Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) and Johnson & Wales University team up to present a simultaneous cooking class and applied mathematics lecture. The event, in the Salomon Center at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday, is sold out but will be webcast.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — Michael Brenner, the Glover Professor of Applied Mathematics and Applied Physics at Harvard, will give a public lecture at Brown on Tuesday, March 17, 2015, exploring how cooking can illuminate some basic mathematical principles.

Brenner will be joined by Mark Ladner, a 1990 graduate of Johnson & Wales University College of Culinary Arts and now executive chef of the award-winning Del Posto Restaurant in New York City. Brenner and Ladner will demonstrate these mathematical principles through a fun and diverse tour of cooking demonstrations, from making fresh ricotta to blowing up marshmallows.

The lecture begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Salomon Center. The event is sold out, but will be webcast at www.brown.edu/web/livestream. The event is co-sponsored by Brown’s Institute for Computational and Experimental Research in Mathematics (ICERM) and Johnson & Wales University.
