Better Eating, Thanks To Postman
Researchers led by Kim Gans, associate professor and co-director of the Institute for Community Health Promotion, have found that sending customized nutritional materials through the mail helped low-income ethnically diverse people eat more fruits and vegetables and improve their diets. Rhode Island has its first laboratory-confirmed case of H1N1 influenza, and three probable cases have been announced at Johnson and Wales University. There have been no confirmed or probable cases at Brown. State medical authorities say H1N1 influenza appears similar to seasonal influenza, relatively mild, and responsive to treatment when necessary. University administrators sent the following e-mail communication to the campus community today.

A study of results from the Shape Up Rhode Island 2007 weight loss competition showed many people can successfully lose weight through such competitions at minimal cost. Details are in

A research team including Brown University has found that the U.S. wildlife import system is broken. In a paper published in Science, the team reported that federal authorities failed to accurately list more than four in five species entering the country. The effect: A range of diseases is introduced into the United States, potentially decimating species, devastating ecosystems and threatening food supply chains and human health.

The Future of Ideas
The Rhode Island Center for Innovation and Entrepreneurship will formally open its headquarters at One Davol Square on Tuesday, April 28, 2009. RI-CIE is a cooperative effort among Providence, the state, Brown University, and business and economic development officials. Gov. Donald L. Carcieri, Mayor David N.
