
Frontiers of Healthcare
Regional and national experts will gather at Brown on Monday, June 8, 2009, to discuss the challenges and opportunities of health care reform and its implications for Rhode Island and the nation. The event is part of the annual Frontiers of Healthcare Conference, organized by Brown University and Rep. Patrick Kennedy (D-R.I.). The conference runs from 8:30 a.m. to noon in the Salomon Center for Teaching and is open to the public without charge.

Meeting of the Corporation
The Corporation of Brown University formally accepted a gift of $30 million today, bringing the total raised for undergraduate financial aid through the Campaign for Academic Enrichment to $285 million. The Corporation also elected 12 new trustees and fellows and authorized the administration to proceed with capital projects for the Mind Brain Behavior program and the Alpert Medical School.

A milestone, not the finish line
Chancellor Thomas J. Tisch has informed members of the Corporation that “Boldly Brown: The Campaign for Academic Enrichment” has reached its overall goal of $1.4 billion. Campaign fund-raising efforts will continue through Dec. 31, 2010, to meet goals for individual priorities, including student financial aid and endowed faculty positions.

Meeting of the Brown Corporation
At its regular Commencement Weekend meeting Friday, May 22, 2009, the Corporation of Brown University elected three new fellows and nine new trustees. The University’s 54-member governing body also modified its rules to allow election of “young alumnus trustees” — recent Brown graduates who will serve three-year terms.

of one Brown student with a laboratory-confirmed case of H1N1
influenza. This individual is
recovering well, and none of the individual’s close contacts is sick.
RIDOH has indicated
there is no need to adjust any plans for

Michael D. Kennedy has been appointed director of the Watson Institute for International Studies at Brown University. Currently director of the University of Michigan’s Weiser Center for Europe and Eurasia and its Weiser Center for Emerging Democracies, Kennedy will begin his new duties at the Watson Institute in July 2009.

Scientists from Brown University, the University of Texas and elsewhere have developed a computational computer model that tracks brain tumor growth virtually and can be matched to real tumors. The new computer model could lead to specific, targeted treatments for individualized therapy. Details are in the May 15 edition of the journal Cancer Research.

The Brown University Graduate School Commencement Ceremony will begin at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday, May 24, 2009, on Lincoln Field, with Dean Sheila Bonde presiding. Dhiraj Catoor, a doctoral candidate in engineering, will deliver the student address, titled “Scholarship Within and Beyond the Ivory Tower.” Several prestigious awards will also be presented.
