Dr. Gene Sharp, political theorist and scholar of nonviolent struggle, has spent mor ethan six decades articulating and advancing the cause of nonviolent action for change. His close study of Gandhi and dicatatorships, as well as his own ideals and writings, have informed nonviolent struggles for freedom around the world. He will speak about the power of people in a world of conflict. Dr. Horwich, recipient of a 2011 Alpert and Mary Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research, will discuss the basic nature of protein folding in the cell, as an assisted process, and how its failure in specific instances leads to neurodegeneration or other diseases. Dr. Horwich and his team have discovered that such misfolding can have profound implications for diseases like Alzheimer's. An informal reception will follow the presentation. Eyal Press, journalist and Phi Beta Kappa history concentrator, believes that the most courageous acts of dissent are often carried out by ordniary people with a strong moral compass. Jesslyn Radack, ethics lawyers and Phi Beta Kappa triple concentrator at Brown and a graudate of Yale Law School, lost her job in the justice department after raising objections to the department's interrogation and treatment of the "American Taliban," John Walker Lindh. Since then, Radack has become a lawyer for whistleblowers. Press and Radack will discuss the decision to dissent and the ensuing havoc, exploring the risks and moral battles of exposing wrongdoing. Sebastian Ruth '97, founder of Community MusicWorks, will resent anecdotes from the history of the fifteen-year-old organization. The Providence-based, nationally recognized organization has been a living experiment in how musicians can impact an urban community through performance, education, and community-building based out of a storefront. The educational goal of Community MusicWorks is cohesive with what American philosopher Maxine Greene calls "openings," where young people, thorugh experiences with the arts, conceive new possibilities for their lives and futures.
