In the afternoon of April 16, scores of students in the Brown University School of Public Health will present studies on topics ranging from global epidemics to Rhode Island health services and from addiction to weight control. Then the school will honor faculty members Steven Buka and William Rakowski, and Dr. Michael Fine, former director of the Rhode Island Department of Health.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. [Brown University] — At Public Health Research Day April 16, 2015, the Brown University School of Public Health will feature 60 research projects of students and postdoctoral researchers from across the school and University before making time to honor key leaders.

“Public Health Research Day provides Brown and our local communities a unique opportunity to see the wide array of work our faculty, students, and staff are doing to improve the well being of Rhode Islanders and populations around the world,” said Terrie Fox Wetle, dean of the School of Public Health. “This year we will also honor three leading figures in the field who’ve made vital contributions to population health.”

Those figures are Steven Buka, chair of epidemiology; William Rakowski, associate dean for academic affairs; and Dr. Michael Fine, former director of the Rhode Island Department of Health.

During the afternoon poster session in Sayles Hall, visitors will be able to talk with researchers about their recent and current work on topics such as social health disparities, health risks during pregnancy, and HIV both abroad and in the United States. The best undergraduate, master’s and doctoral or postdoctoral presenters will win awards.
